It is the story of the times of King of Ahepa. In the days when this king ruled, there came two Nepalese saints namely Machendranatha and Gorakanatha. The saints reached the city of Mangalapura (now known as Mangalore) by crossing the pious river Nethravathi. The places trough which these saints crossed the rivers were given the name of Gorakdandi. Just close to the river of Netravathi, they built a hermitage which later on flourished as an educational center. The kind deed of these saints made the king Ahepa to meet them, where these saints told him the story that this was actually a land meant for sages and religious activities and thus he should contribute some land for such religious activities. The king did so and hence came forth the Mangaladevi temple. Later on this temple became famous as when the pious maidens used to make genuine wishes, they came true.

There is a special linkage between the temples of Mangaladevi and the temple of Kadri as till date it is observed that in the days of Kadri temple festival, hermits from the Kadri temple visit Mangaladevi Temple and offer silken clothes. Navarathri is the most joyous time when one can see various rituals and ceremonies going on in the temple. All nine days of Navarathri are celebrated lavishly in the temple.
