Location: It is located in Kamrup district, not so far from Guwahati, almost 35 k.m away from Guwahati.

History Related to Madan Kamdev:

People were not aware of Madan-Kamdev for many years, because the ruins were hidden by the trees and bushes of the dense forest. Since 1981, there have been some excavations at the site. Archaeologists carefully studied the hills, plains and streams in the area. When the thick jungle near the temple was cleared, some more temples of stones and bricks came into notice, which were completely in a ruined state. Only their foundations and the lowermost sections remained, so it is difficult to imagine how they must have originally looked like. All of them were built in the 11th-12th centuries A.D. Large number of temples at Madan-Kamdev, shows that this was an important religious place once upon a time.



The water tank that has been found also indicates the existence of a residential area in ancient times.

Legend Behind Madan Kamdev temple:

The ruined temple has a sculpture of the god Shiva and the goddess Uma. This god and goddess pair is still worshipped by the people but they call them "Madan-Kamdev". This is why the temple and the place are known as Madan Kamdev.

One of the Oldest Archaeological sites:

Madan-Kamdev is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Assam. In 1977, a small area next to the Madan-Kamdev temple was excavated by archaeologists. Lots of stone sculptures and stone pieces that must have been part of the temple were discovered. An interesting discovery is the three detailed stone models of temples carved out of single pieces of stone. These models were about 1 meter high, and they must have been part of the upper storey of the temple structure.

Picnic Spot:

In ancient times, Assam and its surrounding area was known as Pragjyotisha or Kamarupa. The mighty Brahmaputra River which flows through Assam was known as the Lauhitya. The banks of the river have certain spots that are explored out to be as picnic spots near to Madan Kamdev. As such, the existence of the temple has enhanced the beauty and significance of the picnic spots.

Getting There:

It is 35 k.m away from Guwahati. Guwahati has a good public transport system. Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar is about 30 km away from Madan-Kamdev. In this airport, the connectivity has improved considerably in the last couple of years and all major domestic airlines fly into Guwahati

Madan Kamdev can be reached by railways too. The nearest rail-station is Guwahati which is connected by other major places like Delhi, Kolkota, Mumbai and so on.

Madan Kamdev is very well connected with adjoining regions via bus services. A government agency - ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation) and many private operators provide a considerably good city-bus system. Two nodal points, Adabari and Paltan Bazaar, provide bus services to Madan Kamdev.
